Cultured meat yay or nay
Let’s talk about MEAT! Not just any meat but cultured meat also known as clean meat, synthetic meat or vitro meat. I am not going to beat around the bush, but I love my meat. At the same time I do love animals and wildlife and guilt overflows when I crave for meat as I am not fancy about vegetables. Unfortunately I do not have what it takes to be a vegan.
Let’s start with how cultured meat is created. Muscle tissues from animal stem cells are grown in a lab instead of harvesting from livestock. This process is quite costly which there by makes the end product expensive. Although the first burger patty has already been created, cooked and consumed. It might take more time to refine this production which means it will not be on the shelves anytime soon.
The biggest question in everyone’s mind is, will people actually except cultured meat as a substitute to actual meat. Being a meat lover I am not too sure if I am ready to accept it, because of so many reasons. What would it taste like? Would it taste like real meat or would it taste funny and have an after taste? Will it have the same nutritional values as the real deal? Is it going to be super expensive?
Certain people might also argue that as humans we are at the top of the food chain. Does the creation of cultured meat mean that we are going against nature. Does it reset the balance of nature? Being a meat lover I am all for the prevention of slaughtering animals as I will get my meat anyhow with cultured meat but what would be the repercussions of doing this. Will it increase the number of animals to human ratio?
There are some pros to this idea as well for example, it will stop the slaughtering of animals. This is reason enough to support the idea of cultured meat for many meat lovers as guilty as me. The production of cultured meat will also reduce the chances of contracting diseases like swine flu, bird flu etc. which is definitely a thumbs up.
To conclude, I cannot decide for myself if it’s a yay or nay with so many questions in mind. But I hope everything happens for the best and in the best interest of us meat lovers and the poor animals.
